Postpartum Hair Loss: What I Faced & What You Should Know
Watch the videoPostpartum hair loss caught me off guard. One day I was loving my fuller pregnancy hair, and the next — clumps in the shower, hair all over the floor, and a real dip in confidence. And apparently, I'm not alone — even celebrities like Rihanna have opened up about it.
Why Does It Happen?
During pregnancy, elevated estrogen levels keep hair in its growth phase longer than usual. That's why so many mamas enjoy thicker, fuller hair while pregnant. But after delivery, estrogen levels drop sharply — and all that hair that was "on hold" starts shedding at once.
This is called telogen effluvium, and it typically begins around 3 to 4 months postpartum. It can feel alarming, but it's completely normal.
How Long Does It Last?
For most women, postpartum hair shedding peaks around 4 months after birth and gradually slows down. By 6 to 12 months postpartum, most mamas see their hair return to its pre-pregnancy thickness.
What Helped Me
I won't pretend it was easy watching my hair thin out, but here's what made a real difference for me:
- Gentle styling — I avoided tight ponytails, heat tools, and harsh brushing
- Deep conditioning — keeping my hair moisturized reduced breakage
- A nutrient-rich diet — iron, biotin, and protein are especially important postpartum
- Showing myself grace — this was temporary, and I had to keep reminding myself of that
- Talking about it — sharing my experience with other mamas helped me feel less alone
What Doesn't Help
I tried a few things that didn't make much difference — expensive "hair growth" shampoos, supplements that weren't recommended by my doctor, and stressing about it (which probably made things worse).
When to See a Doctor
If your hair loss is severe, lasts longer than 12 months, or comes with other symptoms like extreme fatigue or unexplained weight changes, it's worth talking to your healthcare provider. Thyroid issues and nutritional deficiencies can also cause hair loss and are worth ruling out.
